The last Five Nations Championship in
history seemed destined to end in a Grand Slam triumph for England
as they led a spirited Welsh side by six points entering injury
time in the final match at Wembley. A resurgent Welsh side, who
in their last game completed a historic one point win over France
in Paris, had other ideas.
Lineout ball won by the outstanding
Chris Wyatt was fed out to Scott Gibbs who powered through the
English defence, scoring a dramatic try to bring Wales within
one point. Neil Jenkins ensuing conversion won the game for Wales
and sent the 79,000 crowd into raptures.
England had fallen at the final hurdle,
the Scots had won the Championship and the Welsh had completed
back to back victories over the two favourites, a fitting finale
to bring the curtain down on the Five Nations Championship. |
