With the final Rugby World Cup of the millennium
being held in Cardiff it was decided to mark the occasion by
building a magnificent new national stadium. To christen the
arena Wales invited World Champions, the 'Springboks' to Cardiff
for what was to become one of the greatest games in the history
of Welsh rugby. The 'Springboks' were widely expected to conquer
the Welsh side comfortably, however Wales demonstrated from the
start just how far they have come since their previous encounter.
The South Africans were outplayed in every phase of the game
and fittingly it was a Welshman Mark Taylor who had the honour
of scoring the first try at the new ground. A powerful break
led by Scott Quinnell enabled Gareth Thomas to score a second
Welsh try and the trusty boot of Neil Jenkins added a further
nineteen points as Wales went on to complete their first historic
victory by 29-19 over the World Champion 'Springboks'. |
