SUNWARD WE CLIMB
by William S. Phillips

Since making their first appearance at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, in May 1972, Snowbirds, the daring Canadian Forces Air Demonstration Team, have displayed their aeronautical skills to more than 30 million spectators throughout North America. Flying Canadair CT1 14 Tutor jet trainers, these pilots have amazed audiences with their fast-paced, heart-stoppong manoeuvers and formations.

In 'Sunward We Climb,' aviation artist William S. Phillips conveys to the viewer the thrill and grace of this precision flying team as they begin their pull up at the bottom of a loop.

This is the second in Phillips' series of North American Flying Teams. Here, the Snowbirds' routine and the day are almost over. Phillips explains: "Darting through patches of sunlight they will now begin their climb sunward, leaving the Prince of Wales Hotel and Waterton Lakes far below, climbing to a realm where the sun relinquishes its power only to the night."
