The inspiration for this painting," says internationally respected African wildlife artist Simon Combes, "came from a pair of amber-colored eyes staring at me through dry, bleached, sunlit grass. The owner of the eyes was alert but not alarmed, telling me by expres-sion alone that I was fine where I was, but to come no nearer."

It was the king of beasts, his gaze fixed on Combes from a thankfully safe distance. This new print was inspired by that fateful meeting. "The composition evolved out-wards from the eyes," Combes remembers. "Wherever I stood, the eyes watched me. . . so I called him 'The Hypnotist."
