MIDDAY SUN
by Simon Combes

Simon Combes, one of the preeminent artists of African wildlife, tells a stirring story of nature at its most splendid in this new limited edition print.

"It is September on the Serengeti Plains," explains Combes. "Months without rain and the sun beating down relentlessly day after day has turned the grass white and yellow and made it dry as tinder." But it hadn't always been this way. The previous year rain had poured down, attracting great herds of wildebeests, who ate the precious fresh grass. They, in turn, were preyed upon by the lions. "Perhaps stimulated by such plentifulness of food,"

Combes reasoned, "they conceived, bringing cubs into one of the harshest environments imaginable." Now the wildebeest herds have moved on, leaving behind the hungry predators and their young to endure the drought. The regal lioness and her two surviving cubs rest and pant in the midday heat, giving emphatic meaning to the phrase, "only the strong survive."

Simon Combes once again displays the talent which has made him a popular favorite of art collectors and critics worldwide, while subtly portraying a cycle of nature that threatens an already endangered species.
