TIME TO HEAD HOME
by William S. Phillips

An F4-U4 Corsair VF-791 belonging to The Fighting Rebels, a reserve squadron from Memphis, Tennessee, unleashes its rockets against a target hidden among the snow-clad mountains of Korea.Mission accomplished, it is time for this fighter to head home. And home for this Corsair is the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Boxer CV-2 1 stationed off the Korean coast.

The F4-U4, introduced October 31 1944, was eventually used by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. It was the first of the four-bladed propeller Corsairs, the early models powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800-18W engine, later models using 42W. Armed with six 50-caliber machine guns, the F4-LT4 rated as a 451 mph fighter.

Often called America's pre-eminent aviation artist, William S. Phillips has had his works displayed in the gallery of the Air Force Academy and at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.
